Elevating a Small Entryway in a London Flat

    Location: Hackney, East London
    Completed: March 2024

    The Challenge

When A. Carter reached out, they described their flat’s entryway as “the space we try not to look at.” Like many London flats, the hallway was narrow, poorly lit, and served as a drop zone for shoes, coats, parcels, and everything in between. The clutter was taking a mental toll, but the client felt overwhelmed by the idea of starting from scratch. Their main goal? Make it feel brighter, calmer, and functional—without knocking down walls or spending a fortune.

We love these kinds of challenges at DecorifyIt. They’re not about big budgets—they’re about big impact through clever planning, practical styling, and creative use of space.

    The Approach

We began with a virtual walkthrough and a few shared reference photos. What stood out immediately was the lack of cohesion: dark wood tones, clunky storage, and poor lighting that made the entryway feel even narrower. Our job wasn’t just to “pretty it up”—it was to make every decision count.

    Here’s what we focused on:

    ✅ Light & Colour

We chose a soft, light-reflecting paint—Farrow & Ball’s “Ammonite”—to instantly brighten the space and bounce the limited natural light from the glass-panelled door. It created a clean backdrop that felt calming from the moment you stepped in.

    ✅ Smart Storage

Instead of a traditional shoe rack that jutted out into the walkway, we installed a wall-mounted IKEA EKET unit, custom-painted to match the trim. This slimline cabinet floated off the ground, giving the illusion of space while keeping clutter tucked away.

    ✅ Visual Flow & Balance

A large circular mirror (70cm diameter) above the console helped visually widen the corridor while adding softness to an otherwise linear space. Beneath it, we added a neutral-toned jute runner that led the eye inwards and softened the echo of the hard floors.

    ✅ Lighting without Wiring

Rewiring wasn’t possible due to tenancy restrictions, so we went with plug-in sconces fitted with linen drum shades. These offered warm ambient light in the evenings and made the entry feel intentional—even cosy.

    ✅ Everyday Functionality

We added matte black metal wall pegs along one side for coats, bags, and keys—practical, but elevated. A small woven basket tucked under the console served as a landing spot for mail and umbrellas.

    Before & After Highlights

    Before:

    • Yellow-tinged walls and orange-toned wood furniture
    • Dim overhead light
    • Visible shoe clutter and mismatched hooks

    After:

    • Soft grey walls that reflect light
    • Minimal, floating console with closed storage
    • Decorative lighting and intentional styling touches
    • Entryway that now feels open, calm, and curated

    Client Feedback

“I used to rush through the hallway just to avoid seeing the mess. Now, it’s my favourite part of the flat. Nyla completely got what we needed—practicality with a bit of polish—and she made it feel achievable, not intimidating.”
    — A. Carter, Hackney

    Nyla’s Reflection

This project reminded me how overlooked entryways can be—and how powerful they become with just a few intentional updates. We didn’t gut the space or bring in high-end furniture. We worked with the existing footprint, layered in light and smart finishes, and made small changes that brought everyday ease.

What I loved most was seeing how the client’s relationship with their home shifted. That’s what good design does—it lifts your mood, even when you’re just grabbing your keys.
